Wilhelm was born by the painter Marc and gave him a stern Calvinist training with his brother Paul. For a short time he cultivated the idea of ​​becoming a pastor. In 1899 he began his studies in the philosophy faculty at the University Ludwig Maximilian University of Monaco in 1900 but decided to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Monaco and to devote himself to painting. He undertook several trips. Particularly important for him were the two visits to Paris in 1903 and 1907. Returning from the first visit Marc left the academy. The second experience he left traces even more evident from studying the work of Van Gogh During these years he painted mostly landscapes and portraits working from Monaco, Staffel Alm, Indersdorf and Kochel, also devoted himself to the illustration of books and gave lectures Private for sustenance.
In 1910, Marc moved to Sindelsdorf and welded so important friendships with August Macke, Helmut Macke and the son of the famous collector Bernhard Koehler, who became a purchaser of his systematic works. In the same year held his first solo exhibition at the Kunsthandlung Brakl of Monaco and became acquainted with members of the Munich Neue Künstlervereinigung after visiting their exhibition at the Galerie Tannhauser. Finally managed to join the group thus being in contact with its main exponents: Vasily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, Kubin, Kanoldt and Marianne von Werefkin. This experience lasted only a year because when the third group shows the jury rejected the abstract work of Kandinsky Komposition V, Kandinsky and Marc left the NKM founded in late 1911 "der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider), artistic group is proposed to publish an annual almanac of the same name. He came out number one in 1912, also took part in the drafting of which Macke and Paul Klee. Marc took part in the group exhibition that was held in Monaco December 18, 1911. In the same year he married the artist Mary Frank in London. The car was shown to all the exhibitions of the group in 1913 and also in the Berlin gallery "Der Sturm" in the "First German Autumn salon" where he exhibited paintings of the last major production which gained great success. In 1912 he was invited to be part of the organizing committee of "Soderbund" in Cologne. There was also an opportunity to visit an exhibition dedicated to Futurism. For some time spent in the Tyrol, before settling in 1914 in Ried near Benediktbeuern (Bavaria). In 1914, the outbreak of World War I, Marc enlisted as a volunteer. At the front, he made sketches and aphorisms, collected in volumes Briefe aus dem Felde and Aufzeichnungen Aphorismen und. He died in 1916, newly promoted to lieutenant of the reserve, fell in combat near Verdun.
