Artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) - American painter and graphic artist. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, the son of a military engineer. But grew up in Russia, where his father, an engineer, worked on the railway St. Petersburg - Moscow. Back in America, little Jimmy showed talent for drawing, and why parents, shortly after arriving in Russia, determined him to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. A year later, he was noted as one of the best students. In 1848, James Whistler returned to America. He entered West Point and is considering a military career. Yet the love of art comes out top in 1855. Whistler goes to Paris to study painting.
Most of his life in England. He painted mainly portraits and landscapes. Worked with oil and pastels and watercolors. Large master etching. Whistler's art in many ways close to French Impressionism. Like the French Impressionist paintings, works of Whistler for a significant period of his life under violent criticism. In the last decade of his life to Whistler gained popularity: in a number of European countries and the United States were a success of his exhibition, the artist was elected president of the "Society of British Artists", was invited to teach at the Paris Academy of Carmen. For a series of etchings "Thames" Whistler awarded Baudelaire.
