Pierre Oliver Joseph Coomans, a Belgian artist. Born in 1816 in Brussels, died in 1889. He was one of the most popular European artists from American collectors, as well as the popularity of his works in this country, only made him a very rich man. He was a native of Brussels, and student of Professor Hasselaere of Ghent, and Nicaise de Keyser and Baron Wappers in Antwerp Academy. He traveled to Italy, Turkey, Greece, and the Crimea. During this time he wrote a historical subjects, and in 1857 he visited Italy, and became interested in the excavations of ancient Pompeii. From then on he became interested in ancient images that made him famous. He had two daughters, both became famous painters.
