John Callcott Horsley - English Academic painter of genre and historical scenes, illustrator
John Callcott Horsley RA (29 January 1817 - 18 October 1903) was an English academic painter of genre and historical scenes, illustrator. He was a member of the artists' colony in Cranbrook.
studied painting at the Academy, and in 1836 his works were exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1840, when a government official Sir Henry Cole came up close to the original greeting - a Christmas card, John Horsley illustrated it with his original drawings. He came up with to decorate a postcard (12x7 cm) this Christmas triptych: in the center of the artist placed the family of Sir Henry Cole, sitting at the Christmas table, the sides are images designed to remind others of mercy and compassion of a respectable English family. The card was a huge success.
