What is it that we put in the highest place of beauty within our homes? - A bunch of flowers, or ragged looking ferns? Born October 1958 in a rural town, New South Wales Australia; Ann Morton has always had an intense appreciation of the beauty and colours within the natural world around her. Perhaps this appreciation has fuelled her strong compulsion to paint from a very early age. Recognition of her natural talents arose as a young girl when she produced works far beyond her years. Self taught, with encouragement from her artist/ inventor father, she embarked on a major journey of discovery at the age of 19. Travelling throughout Europe and North America, she immersed herself in the beauty and skill of the Old Classical Masterpieces. Ann would spend countless hours in numerous Galleries and Museums, closely observing the use of light, texture and colour in the works of Masters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt and later masters of the 19th & early 20th century, such as JW Waterhouse, John Singer Sargent, and Sir Lawrence Alma- Tadema.
As a full-time artist, Ann Morton has enjoyed a highly successful career her entire adult life. Her paintings have attracted a great deal of interest from around the world. She is a member of the Australian Portrait Artists Society, and she has won numerous awards for both portraiture and still life.
Ann always prefers her paintings to 'speak' for her - "I love the juxtaposition of natural things with man-made objects. The irregularity of pattern as opposed to the symmetrical and mechanical nature of our cultures finely crafted artefacts. In an age of speed, I revel in the time I can put into my paintings. Time spent creating something that will delight a person enough for them to want to take it home. It is an art form that has grown from a slower age, but I feel that this makes it more valuable to us now." Ann Morton
